How can we help? 👋

Data Storage, Import and Backups

Keeping your journaling data safe is incredibly important, and we want you to always feel confident knowing that you’re in full control of your stoic data.

This section explains where your data is stored, how to back it up, and how to safely export or import your entries.

Where Your Data Is Stored

All your data in stoic is private and stays either on your device or in your iCloud account, if syncing is enabled. Stoic doesn’t have any servers of its own — we never see or store your personal entries.

💡 Note: Your stoic data counts toward your iCloud storage quota. Make sure you have enough available space if you journal frequently or add photos and videos.

To learn more about syncing and how it works, visit the Stoic Across Devices section of this Help Center.

Why Backups Matter?

Because stoic stores everything locally or in your iCloud, it’s important to back up your data regularly. If something happens to your device, or if you delete the app without exporting your entries, your data will be lost permanently.

That’s why we strongly recommend:

  • Turning on iCloud Sync
  • Making manual backups from time to time
  • Exporting your entries before deleting the app

Managing Data Settings

You can access and manage all storage, syncing, and backup options directly in the app:

  1. Open Your Profile
  1. Scroll down to the Account section
  1. Tap Your Data

A new screen will appear with three main sections:

1. Storage

Here you can view how much space your stoic data takes up.

💡 You can also enable Offload Assets, which helps save space on your device by moving attachments (photos, videos, etc.) to your iCloud.

This is a safe and recommended option if you often upload media to your entries.

2. iCloud Sync

This section lets you:

  • Enable or disable iCloud Sync
  • View your sync status
  • Sync recent changes manually
  • Trigger a complete re-sync if syncing ever seems out of date or has issues

If syncing isn’t working as expected, check that all your devices are logged into the same iCloud account and that stoic has iCloud permissions enabled.

3. Import & Export

Tap Import & Export to access all available backup options.

💡 To include all your photos, videos, and metrics, make sure to switch on Include Attachments.

When this option is off, only the text of your journal entries will be exported.

Exporting and Importing Your Data

Export

You can export your stoic data in two formats:

  • JSON file – best for creating a backup that can later be re-imported into stoic or used in other journaling apps.
  • TXT file – recommended if you just want to read or share your entries (for example, with a therapist).

After export, you can save the file anywhere you prefer — for example, in the Files app, an external drive, or a secure cloud folder.

Import

You can also import data back into stoic whenever you need:

  • Tap Import Stoic JSON Backup to upload a JSON backup file from your device.
  • If you also use the Day One journaling app, you can import your Day One JSON Backup file into stoic — perfect if you want to keep everything in one place or migrate your journals to stoic.

Syncing Across Platforms

Currently, stoic syncing is available only between Apple devices using the same iCloud account.

❗️Syncing between iOS and Android apps is not yet supported.

❗️Syncing between different iCloud accounts is also not possible at this time.

If you use multiple iCloud accounts or want to move entries between devices manually, you can do so by exporting and importing files as described above.

Best Practices for Keeping Your Data Safe

  • Enable iCloud Sync if you’re a Stoic Premium user.
  • Export your data regularly as an extra backup.
  • Keep enough iCloud storage available to avoid sync issues.
  • Remember: stoic cannot access or recover your data — you’re the only one in control.
